Find A Lovely Book Club August – October: Thrills, Humor & Grief

Welcome to Find A Lovely Book Club! A book club where the only rule is to try and read one book. We pick three books for a three-month cycle and you get to decide which one to read OR read all three!

In this trilogy (set? cycle? I toggle between these terms, pick your favorite) we read three very different books. In August, we set off to Lagos where we met two sisters. One who was a serial killer and one who cleaned up the mess. Out of all three, this one was my favorite. In September, we read a book about the aftermath of a shooting and talked about how grief affects all of us so differently. We finished off the set with a book set in a peculiar house, possessed by fungus.

If you weren’t able to join us for these discussions, don’t fret. Head on over to @findalovelybook and join us next time or see below for our live discussions and add your comments to continue the book chat!

My Sister The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

August Book Club Pick: Contemporary Thriller

I really loved this. I loved the writing, the scene structure, and sarcasm. A dark humor thriller told by the perspective of a loyal sibling who helps clean up the mess of her serial killer sister. I’ve never read anything like it and thought it was fresh and unique.

The Lucky Ones by Liz Lawson

September Book Club Pick: Young Adult Contemporary

I really liked the pace of this. It’s a heartfelt story about trauma and grief. This story deals with the aftermath of a school shooting and how we all grieve in our own way.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

October Book Club Pick: Historical Fiction Horror

This is a classic Horror novel set in Mexico. It was a slow burn book that kept you guessing. The end is worth it. It’s one of those books that creeps you out more than it scares you. For me, the biggest character was the house (High Place) and what it was doing to everyone who lived or visited.
