Episode 17: Find A Lovely Book with Brittany Amara

A find a lovely book episode with Brittany Amara

One of the things that got me back into writing was reading. Part of this self-love journey always finds me being guided by a book. Over the pandemic, I launched the Find A Lovely Book Club with the mission to find more lovely books and share them with others. Diving into self-love themes and stories that found me at the right place and at the right time.

Cut to five years later, I took that same love for a discovery of books and became a literary agent! Now, the find a lovely book world has expanded into creating more seats at the table for authors I wish I had read when I was younger, and those who are inspiring me in my journey and where I am now.

In this new podcast series, I interview my clients and their new books. We chat about their writing process and what self-love journeys they have discovered along the way. Don’t worry, we talk about the book, too! Especially how relatable these messy characters are and how they navigate their own self-love journeys too.

A lovely conversation with Brittany Amara

In this episode, we dive into a chilling world that Brittany Amara created in her debut horror novel, THE BLEEDING WOODS. Brittany shares her writing journey with us and how this book helped her heal in unexpected ways. It’s funny how self-love can find us in the darkest places. Healing is never a linear path, and as cathartic as writing can be, it opens us up to discovering new layers of ourselves.

We do a full character case study in this episode. I love how Brittany talks about her characters. They always feel so real and relatable. Even when they’re so dark and spooky. It was so lovely to hear how Clara and Jasper reflected themselves in Brittany and how she alchemized their characters for her own healing journey. Brittany also shares how horror can be healing in your own self-love journey.

Brittany even shared some interesting writing exercises she uses to explore herself and other worlds she creates. I always love learning how other authors use techniques they didn’t even know were a tool to expanding a character’s world and how often those tools help us in our own self-love journey.

More about THE BLEEDING WOODS

In this chilling debut horror novel, a young woman discovering dangerous new powers finds herself lost in the Appalachian Mountains with her first love, the sister she betrayed, and an infatuated stranger bound to her telepathically as a string of vicious murders taints the woods red.

Clara Lovecroft didn’t mean to kill her parents. She was fourteen when it happened. Something inside her had awoken, something terrible and dangerous that Clara’s kept at bay with pills ever since. Not that her sister, Jade, will ever forgive her for what happened. Not that Clara will ever forgive herself.

Nearly a decade later, on the anniversary of their parents’ deaths, Clara joins Jade, their childhood friend, Grayson, and his younger brother, Joey, on a weekend getaway to repair their broken relationship. The spontaneous road trip stalls when their car breaks down, stranding them in Blackstone Forest―a place deeper and darker than anyone can imagine. Here, the forest whispers, and within its haunting foliage, a strange man waits for Clara among the trees, their destinies rooted in death.

He would die for Clara. In fact, he would kill for her.

Before the weekend is over, blood will spill in Blackstone Forest. When it does, Clara will have to face the irresistible stranger in all his terrifying glory. She’ll also discover the truth about their shared pasts. Like the forest itself, it’s monstrous.

Life Advice From Brittany Amara

Brittany encourages us this episode to step into the darkness as a path towards inner light. She inspires me to look deeper into what still shines a light on my own fears. Especially when it comes to writing. Diving into the darkness as a self-love healing tool is a brave act. Not to dwell in it, but to emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before.

Brittany Amara reminds us that even in the darkest woods, there’s always light to be found. And most often, that light comes from within us. It is the light that guides us out of the darkness so that we can create that lovely life we’ve always wanted to live. Join our conversation and see what fears emerge. You are not alone in the woods!
