Why is putting yourself first so hard? For the longest time, I ignored self-love because I grew up thinking it was selfish. Throughout my journey, I’ve learned to reprogram false beliefs, but sometimes it takes longer to unravel certain things. Especially when you’re the eldest daughter of immigrant parents.
I chatted with my lovely eldest daughter friend Julie C. Dao about her Year of Joy and how she prioritized happiness during her healing journey this year. As always, the tarot card is aligned perfectly, and Julie even reads a card for me, too! Needless to say, it left me speechless! I hope you enjoy our chat, and remember to prioritize yourself more.

Season One, Episode Nine
This month’s podcast episode dives into putting yourself first. At the crossroads between how much you’re giving to others and how much you are actually giving back to yourself. When we shift into prioritizing our own needs, we shift something in the self-love journey, it becomes something more powerful. We go from saying yes to no being a full sentence.
We’re often taught to audit finances and spreadsheets, but what about where our energy is going? How are you showing up in your relationships? Are they still serving you the way they need to serve you now? The breakthrough isn’t saying no; it’s recalculating the direction of where you’re prioritizing your energy. Because baby, it’s time to prioritize you.
Putting yourself first, yes.
Over the course of your self-love journey, putting yourself first is going to look different. That’s why there are seasons, remember! You’re learning how to love yourself, how to advocate for your needs. Exploring and flirting with yourself during this time is crucial. It opens up the flow for more of you to flourish. A rose always has a few hidden petals still waiting to bloom; that’s you in this chapter.
Past programming can leave you with the belief that you have to wait for your turn. Nope, not anymore. Let’s reclaim that because around here, you’re always worthy and deserving. I wrote this lovely letter when I hit a pivot point in my self-love journey, when I was tired of feeling sorry for myself for not getting what I wanted. A shift in perspective made me reclaim that old belief and reminded me that there was plenty of abundance to go around, it’s always your turn, I hope it helps remind you of your worth.

A lovely conversation with Julie C. Dao
I met Julie a few years ago while sharing marketing ideas for her books. We connected immediately and stayed in touch. Our FaceTimes motivate us to continue to root for ourselves. We always end the call with something that calls us back to what we’re moving towards, not knowing when the next check-in will be. I hope you are more gentle with yourself this week. I hope you open yourself up to receive. A tender blessing woven into see you next time, I can’t wait to see what The Universe brings you.
We bonded over tarot, but also being the eldest daughters of immigrant parents. A lot of our initial conversations were like a breath of fresh air: Wait, my mom says that too! We guide each other back to what’s important in healing that generational trauma and anchor back to putting ourselves first, not needing to serve everyone. Especially those who don’t give back. This one’s for all the eldest daughters out there.
